Myth in children’s fiction

Myths have proved fertile ground for ideas among writers of children’s fiction. Those most frequently used are the classical myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, Egyptian, Celtic and Norse.

Explore the way in which myth has been used as a source of inspiration for writers of contemporary fiction.

• Consider how these retellings breathe new life into the old stories.

• In what way does the mythic content of these stories bear relevance to the lives of the characters or the world in which they live?

The plot structure and themes of myths can be used as a stimulus for children’s writing, providing a supportive frame while giving sufficient scope for individual interpretation. Children can be invited to write their own updated versions.
